Jonathan Kays replied to Carla Porter's discussion Sassafras trees dying
"Not sure I really have an answer. Is it possible other vegetation is overtopping them and shading them out? They are very intolerant and need full sunlight. The root systems also produce suckers which is what you may be seeing. Many times these…"

"This not something I have heard about. I would look closely to see if there are any insects or other identifiable reason. Are the trees slowly loosing their leaves? How  are they dying?"

Generic version of Garlon herbicide available

The control of aggressive invasive species like tree-of-heaven (ailanthus) is very difficult. Herbicides like glyphosate (Roundup) just do not work that well on root sprouting although they kill the main stem. I was just looking at a Forestry Suppliers flyer and noticed that Garlon 3a and Garlon 4 (active ingredient triclopyr) are now available in a generic form for a lot cheaper (about…See More

Info on Handheld GPS Units

Many landowners have an interest in using a handhled GPS units to locate corners, streams, unique features, hunting stands, fishing spots, buildings, etc. The units available today are quite good and getting better, My experience is with Garmin units and waypoints or tracks taken in the field can easily be pulled into Google Earth. MWS is an 3.5 volunteer training workshop with minimal cost. You will learn how to improve wildlife habitat using sound forest management practices. After 20 years of doing this program I can honestly say people emerge with knowledge that is motivating and exciting. The expectation is that you will develop or improve a forest stewardship plan for your property and share what you learn with others over the next year. More important is to be an advocate for sound forest wildlife management. More…See More

Any thoughts to share?

It was great spending time with the new group of woodland stewards at Shepherd Spring. As an extension educator, MWS is one of the most rewarding programs I do because it really opens up a new world of knowledge about forest and wildlife management, and opportunities on how to better manage your property. Just as important is sharing this new found knowledge with others. If you have any feedback about the training and how it has motivated you to make a difference in your world, please share it!See More
